A. K. Ramanujan

A. K. Ramanujan was an Indian poet, linguist, folklorist, and translator whose work connected South Asian literary traditions with English-language scholarship. Based at the University of Chicago from 1962, he helped develop its South Asian Studies program while teaching across linguistics, literature, and social thought. His influential translations included classical Tamil poetry and works such as *Speaking of Siva* and *The Interior Landscape*; he also received the Padma Shri and a MacArthur Fellowship.
