Adelbert von Chamisso

Adelbert von Chamisso was a German poet and botanist whose literary reputation rests especially on *Peter Schlemihl’s Miraculous Story*, while his scientific work grew from travel, collecting, and close study of plants and animals. As naturalist aboard the Russian ship *Rurik* from 1815 to 1818, he documented species around the Pacific and San Francisco Bay, including the California poppy. He later worked at Berlin’s botanical gardens, bringing together a career in natural history, exploration, and German-language literature.
