Alexander Mackendrick

Alexander Mackendrick was an American-born, Scottish-raised film director and screenwriter whose sharp, humane style shaped some of Ealing Studios’ best-known comedies, including *Whisky Galore!*, *The Man in the White Suit*, and *The Ladykillers*. His 1957 film *Sweet Smell of Success* brought that sensibility into a darker American setting. After directing nine feature films, Mackendrick became a leading film educator and served as founding dean of CalArts’ School of Film/Video.
