Amelia Peláez

Amelia Peláez was a Cuban modernist painter and a leading figure of the island’s first avant-garde generation. Her vivid, quasi-abstract compositions drew on tropical flora, domestic objects, and the ornamental architecture of Cuba, while her work also extended into ceramics and murals. Peláez studied in Havana, New York, and Paris, and her paintings were included in the Museum of Modern Art’s 1944 exhibition Modern Cuban Painters.
