Augustine of Hippo

Augustine of Hippo was a late-antique Christian theologian, philosopher, and bishop whose writings profoundly shaped Western Christianity and philosophy. His *Confessions* combines autobiography with theological reflection, while *The City of God* develops a Christian philosophy of history in response to the crisis of the Roman Empire. His work also engaged deeply with Platonic philosophy and questions concerning God, the soul, grace, human freedom, and the nature of the Church.
