Augustus Earle

Augustus Earle was an English painter, lithographer, and traveller whose journeys across the Americas, Pacific, New Zealand, and Australia shaped a wide-ranging body of landscape, portrait, and genre art. After arriving in Australia in 1825, he documented colonial life, Indigenous Australians, and the country’s landscapes, while helping establish lithographic printing in Sydney. His Australian and New Zealand works are valued as both artistic achievements and important records of early nineteenth-century colonial society.
