Bessie Smith

Bessie Smith was an American blues singer whose commanding, emotionally direct voice made her one of the defining performers of the 1920s. Known as the “Empress of the Blues,” she recorded nearly 160 songs for Columbia between 1923 and 1933, often with leading jazz musicians including Louis Armstrong. Her recordings and stage career helped establish classic blues as a major force in American popular music.
