Carol Reed

Carol Reed was an English film director and producer whose most influential period produced the atmospheric thrillers *Odd Man Out*, *The Fallen Idol*, and *The Third Man*. His direction of *The Third Man*—set in postwar Vienna and made with Graham Greene—remains his defining achievement, while *Oliver!* demonstrated his range beyond film noir. Reed later won the Academy Award for Best Director for *Oliver!* (1968).
