Dante Alighieri

Dante Alighieri was a Florentine poet and scholar whose *Divine Comedy* became one of the foundational works of Western literature. Born in Florence in 1265, he also wrote *Vita nuova*, a prose-and-verse work centered on his love for Beatrice. His life combined literary study with civic experience, including study at Bologna and military service for Florence.
