Dorothy Masuka

Dorothy Masuka was a Zimbabwe-born South African jazz singer, songwriter, and composer whose career took shape in Johannesburg after she moved there as a child. Her songs, including “Hamba Nontsokolo,” “Dr. Malan,” and “Lumumba,” combined popular jazz with commentary on apartheid and African liberation. That political work contributed to years of exile before her return to South Africa in 1992, and she remained an important figure in the country’s musical and cultural history.
