Douglas Mawson

Douglas Mawson was an Australian geologist and Antarctic explorer whose career combined field science with ambitious polar expeditions. After joining Ernest Shackleton’s 1907–09 expedition, he led the Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911–14, which charted extensive coastline and advanced research in geology, cartography, meteorology, geomagnetism, biology, and marine science. He later led BANZARE, helping map and document territory that became part of the Australian Antarctic Territory.
