Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas was a French artist whose paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures transformed scenes of modern Paris into incisive studies of movement and observation. Although associated with Impressionism, he favored careful drawing, urban subjects, and artificial light rather than the movement’s characteristic outdoor painting. He is especially known for his depictions of ballet dancers, as well as subjects drawn from theaters, cafés, racetracks, and domestic life.
