Egerton Ryerson

Egerton Ryerson was a Canadian Methodist minister, journalist, and educational administrator who helped shape Ontario’s modern public-school system. As chief superintendent of education for Upper Canada and later Canada West, he promoted standardized schooling, teacher training, and broader access to elementary education. He also founded and edited the Methodist Christian Guardian, while his educational ideas and later association with policies affecting Indigenous schooling remain subjects of historical scrutiny.
