Emily Carr

Emily Carr was a Canadian painter whose modernist landscapes and depictions of British Columbia’s coastal forests, villages, and Indigenous cultural sites made her a leading figure in twentieth-century Canadian art. Though she struggled for recognition for much of her career, her work gained national attention through connections with the Group of Seven. In her later years, Carr also became an acclaimed writer, winning the 1941 Governor General’s Literary Award for *Klee Wyck*.
