Flora Gomes

Flora Gomes is a pioneering Bissau-Guinean filmmaker whose cinema explores the legacies of colonialism, war, memory, and post-independence identity. His breakthrough film, *Mortu Nega* (1988), reexamines Guinea-Bissau’s war of independence through the experience of a woman following her husband to the battlefield. Later works including *The Blue Eyes of Yonta* (1992) and *Tree of Blood* (1996) established his international reputation and distinctive blend of political history, myth, and cultural reflection.
