Frances Hodgkins

Frances Hodgkins was a New Zealand painter whose career unfolded largely in Europe and Britain, where she became a leading figure in modern British art. After working primarily in watercolour, she developed an increasingly modernist style that blended landscape and still life through flattened space, vivid colour, and ambiguous compositions. She represented Britain at the 1940 Venice Biennale and remained an important influence on the recognition of New Zealand art abroad.
