Franz Anton Mesmer

Franz Anton Mesmer was a German physician who developed and promoted the late-eighteenth-century healing theory known as “animal magnetism,” later called mesmerism. After studying medicine at the University of Vienna, he explored the idea that an invisible natural force influenced health and could be directed by the healer. His work made him a controversial public figure and helped inspire later debates about hypnosis and suggestive therapy.
