About Frederick McCubbin
Frederick McCubbin was an Australian painter and art teacher associated with the Heidelberg School, whose landscapes and narrative scenes helped define Australian Impressionism. Born and based largely in Melbourne, he studied and later taught at the National Gallery of Victoria, where he influenced younger artists including Arthur Streeton and Charles Conder. His work drew on the Australian bush and urban surroundings, while a 1907 visit to Europe encouraged brighter colour and freer brushwork in his later paintings.
