About Gilbert Ryle

Gilbert Ryle was a British philosopher associated with twentieth-century analytic and ordinary-language philosophy. His best-known book, The Concept of Mind (1949), challenged Cartesian dualism and argued that many philosophical puzzles about the mind arise from category mistakes. Ryle also helped shape Oxford philosophy as editor of Mind from 1947 to 1972 and as Waynflete Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy.
