Grigore Vasiliu Birlic

Grigore Vasiliu Birlic was a Romanian stage and screen actor celebrated for his comic performances. At Bucharest’s National Theatre, he became especially associated with characters from Ion Luca Caragiale’s comedies, including roles in *D-ale carnavalului*, *O noapte furtunoasă* and *O scrisoare pierdută*. The nickname “Birlic” came from the success of a comedy in which he played a small official early in his career.
