Gustavo Gutiérrez

Gustavo Gutiérrez was a Peruvian Catholic theologian and Dominican priest whose work helped establish liberation theology as a major movement in Latin American Christianity. His 1971 book, A Theology of Liberation, connected Christian faith with the lived realities of poverty, inequality, and social injustice, advancing a “preferential option for the poor.” He also founded Lima’s Instituto Bartolomé de las Casas in 1974, supporting theological study and social engagement.
