About Hector Hyppolite
Hector Hyppolite was a self-taught Haitian painter whose vivid, simplified compositions drew on Vodou spirituality, Haitian culture, and everyday life. Born in Saint-Marc, he came from a family of houngans and worked variously as a shoemaker and house painter before DeWitt Peters helped launch his professional art career through Port-au-Prince’s Centre d’Art. His paintings, including *The Congo Queen* (c. 1946), helped bring international attention to modern Haitian art.
