Humphrey Jennings

Humphrey Jennings was a pioneering British documentary filmmaker whose work transformed wartime nonfiction into poetic, emotionally resonant cinema. Working with the GPO and Crown Film Units, he made influential films including Listen to Britain (1942), Fires Were Started (1943), and A Diary for Timothy (1945), often focusing on ordinary people and shared national experience. He was also a painter and a key participant in Britain’s 1930s surrealist and documentary movements.
