Ignacio Martín-Baró

Ignacio Martín-Baró was a Spanish Jesuit priest and social psychologist whose scholarship examined El Salvador’s social and political realities during its civil war. At the Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas, he taught psychology, led the psychology department, served as an academic vice rector, and founded the University Institute of Public Opinion. His work argued that psychology should engage directly with historical conditions and the experiences of oppressed communities in Latin America; he was murdered in San Salvador on November 16, 1989, alongside fellow Jesuits and university staff.
