Ignatius Sancho

Ignatius Sancho was an 18th-century British writer, composer and grocer whose published letters and essays made him an important Black voice in Georgian Britain. Born into enslavement and brought to London as a child, he later established a grocery business in Westminster and became one of the first Black men known to vote in a British parliamentary election. He also published musical compositions, including songs and dances, while writing critically about slavery and public life.
