Ilya Kabakov

Ilya Kabakov was a Soviet-born American conceptual artist whose work developed from drawings and children’s-book illustration into expansive installations. A key figure in Moscow’s unofficial conceptual-art scene, he explored isolation, communal life, and utopian longing through environments combining architecture, painting, text, and theatrical elements. From 1989, he collaborated with Emilia Kabakov on ambitious “total installations” that placed viewers inside imagined social worlds.
