Jack Patten

Jack Patten (1905–1957) was an Aboriginal Australian leader who helped build the modern Aboriginal rights movement. As a leader of the Aborigines Progressive Association, he played a prominent role in organizing Sydney’s 1938 Day of Mourning protest. In 1939, he urged residents of Cummeragunja to leave the reserve in protest against oppressive conditions, an action remembered as the Cummeragunja walk-off.
