Jagath Weerasinghe

Jagath Weerasinghe is a Sri Lankan contemporary artist whose intense, gestural paintings confront questions of nationhood, religion, identity, and political violence. A major figure in the country’s socially engaged art since the early 1990s, he coined the term “90s Art Trend” to describe the politically conscious practice of his generation. He also co-founded the Theertha International Artists’ Collective in 2000, helping foster new artistic initiatives in Sri Lanka.
