James Brown

James Brown was an American singer, songwriter, bandleader, and electrifying live performer whose gospel-rooted style helped define soul and establish funk as a major force in popular music. Known as the “Godfather of Soul,” he combined tightly syncopated rhythms with demanding choreography and became a powerful cultural voice through songs such as “Say It Loud—I’m Black and I’m Proud.” His innovations shaped later genres including hip-hop, reggae, and Afrobeat.
