Jessie Mackay

Jessie Mackay was an early New Zealand poet whose writing drew on Scottish ballads, Māori traditions, and the emerging idea of a distinct national literature. Her poetry collections included *The Spirit of the Rangatira* (1889), *From the Māori Sea* (1908), *Land of the Morning* (1909), and *The Bride of the Rivers* (1926). Alongside poetry, she worked as a journalist and campaigned for women’s suffrage, prohibition, penal reform, and other humanitarian causes.
