John Newton

John Newton was an Anglican clergyman whose earlier career included service as a slave-ship captain and involvement in the Atlantic slave trade. After leaving the sea and entering the ministry, he became rector of St Mary Woolnoth in London and supported organized abolitionist efforts. He is also remembered as the author of the hymn “Amazing Grace,” linking his religious work with his later public opposition to the trade he had once advanced.
