John Strachan

John Strachan was an Anglican clergyman, educator, and political leader who became the first Anglican Bishop of Toronto in 1839. He promoted public and higher education in Upper Canada, securing the charter for King’s College in 1827 and later founding Trinity College after King’s College became secular. His influence also extended through service on the colony’s Executive and Legislative Councils, making him a central—though conservative—figure in nineteenth-century Canadian public life.
