José Sarney

José Sarney is a Brazilian lawyer, writer, and politician who served as president from 1985 to 1990, taking office during Brazil’s transition back to civilian rule. His administration focused on rebuilding democratic institutions while confronting severe inflation and established the Ministry of Culture in 1985. After leaving the presidency, he continued a long legislative career as a senator representing Amapá.
