About Joseph Banks

Joseph Banks was an English naturalist and botanist whose collecting and observations helped expand European knowledge of plants and animals. He joined James Cook’s first Pacific voyage aboard HMS Endeavour (1768–1771), gathering extensive specimens from South America, New Zealand, and Australia. As president of the Royal Society from 1778 until his death, Banks also promoted scientific expeditions and influenced the development of Kew Gardens.
