About Joseph Butler

Joseph Butler was an English bishop and moral philosopher whose work examined conscience, virtue, human nature, and religious belief. His Fifteen Sermons (1726) developed an influential account of moral psychology, while The Analogy of Religion (1736) defended Christianity by comparing religious arguments with the ordered course of nature. He later served as bishop of Bristol and bishop of Durham, remaining an important figure in eighteenth-century Anglican theology and moral philosophy.
