Kinjikitile Ngwale

Kinjikitile Ngwale was a spiritual medium and ritual leader whose message helped catalyze the Maji Maji uprising against German colonial rule in East Africa. Based in Matumbi country, he promoted maji—a sacred war medicine—and urged communities to unite across ethnic divisions. German forces executed him by hanging on August 4, 1905, but the movement he inspired continued and became an important symbol of anti-colonial resistance in Tanzania.
