Ludwig Knoop

Ludwig Knoop was a Bremen-born cotton merchant and entrepreneur whose career helped connect British textile technology with the rapidly industrializing Russian Empire. After moving to Moscow in 1840, he worked with Russian partners to establish mechanized cotton production and later founded or financed numerous textile enterprises. His influence extended beyond manufacturing into banking, insurance, and international trade, and Russia honored him with a baronial title in 1877.
