Luo Wenzao

Luo Wenzao was a Dominican priest and the first Chinese Catholic bishop, serving as apostolic vicar of Nanjing after his consecration in Guangzhou in 1685. Born in Fu’an, Fujian, he studied in Manila and helped advance a locally rooted Chinese clergy. He was also associated with the debate over Chinese cultural and ancestral rites in Catholic practice, favoring a more accommodating approach.
