Mahmoud Mokhtar

Mahmoud Mokhtar was a pioneer of modern Egyptian sculpture who combined Pharaonic motifs with European academic technique. His best-known work, Nahdat Misr (Egypt’s Awakening), transformed the symbolism of the 1919 Revolution into a monumental national image. Mokhtar’s sculptures of rural Egyptian figures and his nationalist vision helped establish sculpture as a central medium of modern Egyptian identity.
