Mamie Smith

Mamie Smith was an American vaudeville singer whose 1920 recording of “Crazy Blues” helped launch the commercial blues-recording era. Performing with her band, the Jazz Hounds, she worked across vaudeville, jazz, and blues before also appearing in films. Her career made her an important early African American recording artist and a prominent figure in the development of blues history.
