Mercedes Sosa

Mercedes Sosa was an Argentine folk singer whose powerful interpretations helped carry the Nueva Canción movement from Argentina to audiences across Latin America and Europe. Born in San Miguel de Tucumán, she co-founded the Movimiento del Nuevo Cancionero in 1963 and became known for performances that connected folklore with social commitment. Her landmark recordings include *Cantata sudamericana*, *Mercedes Sosa en Argentina*, and *Cantora*, released shortly before her death in 2009.
