About Nicholas Chevalier
Nicholas Chevalier was a Russian-born painter, lithographer, illustrator, and cartoonist who became an important early artist in colonial Australia. After arriving in Victoria in 1855, he worked for Melbourne Punch and helped introduce lithography and chromolithography to the colony. His landscape painting The Buffalo Ranges (1864) became the first work painted in Australia acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria. Chevalier also documented Victorian landscapes and accompanied the Duke of Edinburgh during his Australian tour.
