Paulin Hountondji

Paulin Hountondji was a Beninese philosopher whose work helped reshape modern African philosophy. In African Philosophy: Myth and Reality, he challenged ethnophilosophy—the treatment of collective cultural beliefs as a unified philosophy—and argued for critical, rigorous philosophical inquiry. He also taught philosophy in Benin and briefly served as the country’s minister of education and minister of culture and communications.
