Ralph Hotere

Ralph Hotere was a major Aotearoa New Zealand artist whose practice moved from painting into sculpture and installation. His restrained, often black-centered works incorporated Māori heritage, Catholic influences, poetry, and protest against war, injustice, colonisation, and environmental destruction. He also developed important collaborations with writers and artist Bill Culbert, and received the Order of New Zealand in 2012.
