Rita Angus

Rita Angus was a pioneer of modern painting in New Zealand, known for portraits and landscapes rendered in clear colours and a distinctive, graphic style. Her works—including *Cass*, *Rutu*, and *Central Otago*—became important images in the visual culture of Aotearoa. A committed pacifist and feminist, Angus pursued an independent artistic path and was later recognised as one of the country’s leading twentieth-century artists.
