About Robert Watson-Watt
Robert Watson-Watt was a Scottish physicist and radio engineer whose early meteorological research used radio signals to locate thunderstorms. In 1935, he and Arnold Wilkins demonstrated that radio waves could detect aircraft, work that led to Britain’s Chain Home radar network before World War II. Watson-Watt later served as scientific adviser to the Air Ministry and was knighted in 1942 for his contributions to radar development.
