Roberto Matta

Roberto Matta was a Chilean painter and architect whose surrealist work transformed inner experience into vast, fantastical “psychological” landscapes. After training as an architect and working in Le Corbusier’s studio, he joined the Paris Surrealist circle and later became an influential presence in New York, where his work helped connect Surrealism with the emerging Abstract Expressionist scene. His art also took on increasingly political dimensions, and he received Chile’s National Prize for Art in 1990.
