Rufino Tamayo

Rufino Tamayo was a Mexican painter, muralist, printmaker, and sculptor whose vividly colored, semiabstract art drew on both European modernism and pre-Columbian Mexican traditions. Unlike many postrevolutionary muralists, he generally avoided overt political messaging, pursuing a more personal and formally experimental vision. He also helped establish Mexico City’s Museo Tamayo, which opened in 1981 to present international modern and contemporary art.
