Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz

Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, known as Witkacy, was a Polish painter, photographer, dramatist, novelist and art theorist whose work moved between visual experimentation and literary modernism. He studied at Kraków’s Academy of Fine Arts, traveled with Bronisław Malinowski’s 1914 ethnographic expedition, and later became associated with the Formist avant-garde. His grotesque plays, philosophical fiction and distinctive portrait business made him one of the most versatile and unconventional Polish artists of the interwar period.
