About Stephen Girard

Stephen Girard was a French-born merchant and banker who built a major Atlantic trading business before establishing Girard’s Bank in Philadelphia. During the 1793 yellow-fever epidemic, he helped supervise emergency care for the sick, and during the War of 1812 his financial support strengthened U.S. government credit. His bequest founded Girard College and directed much of his fortune toward public and charitable institutions.
